The town also has the area's only fish-market, which provides fresh snapper, mahi-mahi and tuna to local restaurants and residents alike.

North from Mal Pais a few kilometeres, Santa Teresa Beach is known the world around for its consistent surf, gorgeous beaches and beautiful sunsets. Although typically known as the "green season" due to the rain, the months of May through December usually produce the largest waves for surfing. Manzanillo is a short drive north of Santa Teresa. It is a small Costa Rican fishing village with a beautiful beach. Every year at the beginning of April, the town hosts a popular sand castle competition.
